Little STEAMers: WOW with Water

Starting with a water-themed mystery bag, children will investigate intriguing objects, share their ideas and make predictions about what they might discover. A lively warm-up gets everyone moving and thinking, while a story and song bring the theme to life.

First, we’ll explore the water cycle through movement and imagination, discovering how water travels around our planet as it evaporates, forms clouds and falls back to Earth as rain. Children will then investigate absorption, testing different materials to discover which ones soak up water and which ones don’t. They’ll make predictions, observe what happens and compare their results.

Next comes a dissolving investigation. What happens when different substances are added to water? Children can watch carefully to discover which materials dissolve and which remain visible, developing their understanding that something can still be present even when we can no longer see it.

Along the way, we’ll make connections with the Royal Navy and life at sea, thinking about why water is so important aboard ships and how sailors and engineers need to understand and work with it.

With plenty of opportunities to predict, test, observe and talk about what they discover, Wow with Water encourages children to see the everyday world around them with fresh eyes – because even a puddle can hold a surprising amount of science!

This session is designed for children aged 3–5 and must be accompanied by an adult.
