Little STEAMers: Space Explorers

Ready for lift-off? Become a young space explorer in this playful, hands-on workshop, where children can investigate stars, rockets and the Moon through stories, movement, making and simple science experiments.

Inspired by the technology and engineering behind aircraft and naval aviation, children can become space explorers as they make star-gazers, launch balloon rockets and discover how air can make things move.

Starting with a space-themed mystery bag, children will discover intriguing objects and use clues to guess where their adventure might take them. A lively warm-up gets everyone moving like astronauts, while a story introduces the wonders of space and brings the theme to life.

Children will then take part in three practical challenges. First, they’ll make their own star-gazer telescopes, using creativity and imagination to explore the night sky. Next, it’s time for a rocket launch! Children will investigate forces and movement by creating simple balloon rockets, watching what happens when air is released and discovering how it can push their rocket forwards. They can experiment with their designs and see how far their rockets can travel.

Finally, children will create their own Moon pictures using printing techniques inspired by the Moon’s rocky, cratered surface.

Along the way, we’ll make connections with Royal Navy aviation and the engineering behind aircraft, thinking about how people use science and technology to help machines fly.

With a mystery bag, warm-up, story and song alongside the practical activities, Space Explorers encourages children to ask questions, make predictions and have a go, showing that science and engineering begin with curiosity and a willingness to find out what happens next.

This session is designed for children aged 3–5 and must be accompanied by an adult.
