Little STEAMers: Float My Boat

Why do some things float while others sink? Discover the science behind boats, ships and floating objects through hands-on experiments, creative making and plenty of opportunities to have a go.

Inspired by the boats and ships of the Royal Navy, children become boat engineers as they design, build and test their own creations, discovering that changing the shape of something can change what happens in water.

Starting with a mystery bag filled with objects linked to boats and water, children will make predictions about what might float or sink. They’ll then test their ideas, carefully watching what happens and comparing their predictions with the results. Along the way, they’ll discover that an object’s size or weight isn’t the only thing that matters, its shape can make a big difference too.

Next, children become boat engineers and design their own boats. They can experiment with different shapes and materials before placing their creations on the water. Will their boat float? Will it tip over? If it doesn’t quite work, they can make changes and try again.

There are plenty of opportunities to make connections with the Royal Navy as children think about the boats and ships that need to stay safely afloat at sea. They’ll discover that engineers use testing and problem-solving to help make boats work effectively.

With a lively warm-up, story and song alongside the practical activities, Floating and Sinking encourages young children to predict, observe, experiment and create, showing that being a scientist or engineer is all about asking questions, testing ideas and having another go.

This session is designed for children aged 3–5 and must be accompanied by an adult.
