Little STEAMers: Coding Unplugged

What happens when you give an instruction in the wrong order? Find out in this playful introduction to coding, where young children can take their first steps into the world of programming without using a computer, tablet or screen.

Inspired by the importance of clear instructions and teamwork aboard Royal Navy ships, children can become programmers, follow their own “code” and discover that sometimes you need to try, change and try again!

Starting with a mystery bag of intriguing objects, children will discover the importance of instructions and begin exploring patterns, sequences and directions through movement, music, games and stories. They’ll follow sequences of actions, spot repeating patterns and create their own, developing the observation and logical-thinking skills that are at the heart of coding.

Children will then work together to navigate a fun maze, taking turns to become the “programmer” and the “robot”. Can they give clear instructions to help their partner reach the destination? What happens if an instruction is missed or doesn’t work? By spotting the problem, changing their instructions and trying again, children are introduced to the idea of debugging.

There are plenty of opportunities to make connections with the Royal Navy too. Just like a crew working together aboard a ship, children discover how important it is to listen carefully, communicate clearly and follow instructions in the right order.

With a mystery bag, warm-up, story and song alongside the practical activities, this session makes early coding accessible, active and fun, showing children that programmers are curious problem-solvers who learn by having a go.

This session is designed for children aged 3–5 and must be accompanied by an adult.

Session 1: 10.45am – 11.45am
Session 2: 12.30pm – 1.30pm
