Home Educators Programme: Mission Reach the Island

How can you deliver vital supplies when a community has become isolated and the route is too dangerous for people to travel? Join fellow home educators as part of a Royal Marines Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) task group and explore how autonomous technology could help reach people in challenging environments.

Together, you will build and programme an autonomous vehicle capable of navigating difficult terrain and delivering an emergency payload. Experiment with sensors, test obstacle-avoidance systems and develop your vehicle’s ability to respond to its surroundings as you work towards completing the mission.

Inspired by the increasing use of autonomous and uncrewed systems in military and humanitarian operations, this hands-on STEM challenge introduces concepts including robotics, programming, artificial intelligence, sensors and systems engineering. You will also develop valuable skills in problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, communication and logical thinking – skills that can be used in both military roles and a wide range of civilian careers.

Designed by STEM specialist Rob Bennett for home educators, to complement the new Royal Marines Experience, this session is part of our year-long Mission Critical programme for home educators. You will have the opportunity to experiment, test your ideas and make improvements as you work towards navigating your vehicle through challenging terrain and successfully delivering its supplies.

Younger siblings can also get involved with activities designed especially for them.

Tickets include access to the full Historic Dockyard site on this day, so you can continue your adventure before or after the session.
