Home Educators Programme: Mission Clear the Route

What happens when an evacuation route is blocked by heavy debris following a disaster? Join fellow home educators as part of a Royal Marines Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) task group and take on a mission to restore access for civilians and emergency services.

Working together, you will design and build a pneumatic crane or winch capable of moving debris blocking a key evacuation route. Put your engineering skills to the test as you investigate how forces, mechanical advantage and pneumatics can be used to lift and move a load safely. Can you find the most effective solution while working within the resources available?

Inspired by the real-world work of the Royal Marines, this hands-on STEM challenge introduces concepts including forces, mechanical engineering, pneumatics and load distribution. Along the way, you will develop valuable skills in teamwork, communication, creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking – skills that can be used in both military roles and a wide range of civilian careers.

Designed by STEM specialist Rob Bennett for home educators, to complement the new Royal Marines Experience, the session is part of our year-long Mission Critical programme for home educators. You will have the opportunity to experiment, test your ideas and make improvements as you work towards completing your mission safely and effectively.
