Home Educators Programme: Exploration Day - 17 June

Your mission is almost complete, but how might we use STEM and engineering to protect communities in the future? Join fellow home educators as part of a Royal Marines Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) task group and take on a final challenge inspired by the work of the Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm.

Your task is to design and build a delivery capsule capable of being dropped from a Fleet Air Arm aircraft. The challenge? Your cargo must land upright and without damage. Experiment with different designs, materials and ways of protecting your payload, then test your ideas to see which solutions work best.

This hands-on activity encourages you to think like an engineer, exploring concepts such as forces, gravity, impact, aerodynamics, materials and structural design. You will also develop valuable skills in creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, communication and testing – skills that are useful in both military roles and a wide range of civilian careers.

Designed by STEM specialist Rob Bennett for home educators, to complement the new Royal Marines Experience, this Exploration Day forms part of our year-long Mission Critical programme for home educators. Drop in between 10.30am and 2.30pm, choose your challenge and work at your own pace, with opportunities to work alongside other Mission Critical recruits, share ideas and develop your skills.
A friendly facilitator will be on hand to encourage and support as you complete your final mission.

Aimed at learners aged 7–18, with activities available for younger siblings too. A friendly facilitator will be on hand to encourage and support. Tickets include access to the full Historic Dockyard site on this day, so you can continue your adventure before or after the session.
