Home Educators: Exploration Day - 15 April

How can you reach a community that has become isolated following a natural disaster? Join fellow home educators as part of a Royal Marines Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) task group and take on the challenge of designing a vehicle capable of reaching a disaster zone.

This self-led exploration day gives you the opportunity to investigate energy, movement and engineering through a practical vehicle-building challenge. Using the materials provided, design and construct a vehicle powered by kinetic energy, using a rubber band to store and release energy. Test your vehicle, make improvements and see if you can get it to travel as far and as reliably as possible.

Inspired by the problem-solving challenges faced during humanitarian operations, the activity introduces STEM concepts including kinetic energy, forces, friction, motion and mechanical design. You will also develop valuable skills in creativity, experimentation, teamwork, communication and problem-solving – skills that can be used in both military roles and a wide range of civilian careers.

Designed by STEM specialist Rob Bennett for home educators, to complement the new Royal Marines Experience, this session is part of our year-long Mission Critical programme for home educators. Drop in between 10.30am and 2.30pm, choose your challenge and work at your own pace, with opportunities to work alongside other Mission Critical recruits, share ideas and develop skills that can be extended in the Mission 4 workshop.

Aimed at learners aged 7–18, with activities available for younger siblings too. A friendly facilitator will be on hand to encourage and support. Tickets include access to the full Historic Dockyard site on this day, so you can continue your adventure before or after the session.
